How can Duolingo motivate people to do their daily lesson?

A language-learning insight.

Most people aim to learn languages to “speak like a local”. But, because their language learning experience is largely constricted to their phone’s field of view, users rarely get an opportunity to immerse themselves within the cultures of the languages they’re learning. We, at Duolingo, feel differently about this.

Duolingo believes that immersion is the best teacher.

So, we want to make your journey into learning a new language more than just a daily lesson, because we want you to speak like a local.

The Illusion

We’re not motivating people to learn new languages, we’re just helping them speak like a local.

Let’s Create a campaign promoting local, culturally diverse, businesses.

This ensures a source of motivation because the lessons are as easy as running errands while allowing them to be centred around something the users can actually practice.

We begin by identifying some key local businesses and make ads for them in their native languages.

Scanning these ads for local products and businesses would count in your streak, without having to do a daily lesson.

Then, we create special lessons on Duolingo to aide customers translate these signs, and have more context specific conversations.

To make these lessons even easier, Duolingo will reward its users for immersing themselves without even intending to.

Why let a lack of motivation stop you from speaking like a local?
